Letters from Louise – September 2025

posted in: Headway Plymouth | 1

The lastest from our client, Louise, with her monthly update on how she has enjoyed her time at Headway Plymouth across September!

Tuesday 2nd September – Card Games

Craig, the CEO, taught several of us how to play the card game Sevens, which I’d never heard of before.  It’s just like Patience which I’d not played since I was a child and luckily, I did win a couple of games, but I’d definitely have to be reminded how to play it again in future.

I also played a couple of games of Scrabble after lunch, which I always enjoy.

Friday 5th September – Megan’s Fitness

Unfortunately, I missed Megan’s gentle fitness class today, as I met up with a friend I’d not seen for ages.  However, I didn’t feel too bad about missing the one session, as I’m usually participate, and it’s fun.

After lunch I chatted a bit and played Scrabble with another client, who arrived rather belatedly, and it was good to catch up with her again.

Tuesday 9th September – Mindful Art Club

Today we did some scratch art with Emma and Kerry, which was enjoyable, and I did a couple of bookmarks for both myself and my niece Sadie, as well as one of the other clients at the Centre.

Friday 12th September – Cooking Club

Some of the clients took part in making a variety of cookies, i.e. chocolate cookies with chocolate chips, milk chocolate chip cookies, and ones with nuts in addition to milk chocolate chips.  I didn’t join in this activity as I wouldn’t make cookies at home, but I did taste the chocolate cookies as someone had to do it – yum!  I had several games of Uno, which I don’t usually get to do, as well as my beloved Scrabble, of course and a bit of a natter.

Tuesday 16th September – A Guided Tamar Bridge Visitors Centre Trip

I wasn’t sure what to expect today, but both Mark Tebbs and Andrew the volunteer gave an interesting and inciteful history and tour of an area that I’d not really thought about before.  We even got to go into the control room where they monitor everything 24 hours a day and there is a small museum there too, so Craig the CEO of Headway Plymouth tried on clothes and a top hat, which was quite becoming on him, unlike Jo, whose head totally disappeared, as the hat was way too big for her tiny head! All in all, I would highly recommend a visit there to learn more about an important part of Plymouth’s history.

Friday 19th September – Stitch and Splodge

Louise directed us with how to make fabric wreaths.  I’d not made one before and, as I’m not the most creative person in the world, I was a bit apprehensive.  However, it ended up being quite enjoyable, and I loved all the different autumnal colours that were made available to us.  I gave the wreath I made to my dad.

23rd September – Food for Fun with Tami

I helped Tami at the hob mainly.  I don’t usually like curries, as I don’t like rice alongside it. Luckily, the clients made some naan bread instead, which was lovely and light.  I’ll have another portion of the curry when I’m next in, unless another client gets it first..

26th September – Gentle Exercise with Megan

Thankfully, it was a gentle exercise session with Megan today, focusing on our joints.  I do try to practise some of the exercises that Megan teaches us, at home.  I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was surprised that there were more participants than usual – the lovely weather must have brought them out!

30th September Wordscapes with the Team

I’m usually pretty good at these games, but I had to give up in the end, much to my dismay. I’ll find out the answers later, and will probably kick myself for not seeing them! I prefer doing codebreakers, really.  However, it’s good to try something different and I may see if there are some Wordscapes online to practise with.  Apart from that I played Scrabble and continued typing a letter to my pen pal in the Netherlands.
