Great Funding News from the Livewell Foundation

We have some brilliant news to share!

We’re thrilled to announce that Headway Plymouth has been awarded a major grant from the Livewell Foundation

Headway Plymouth is addressing a different kind of invisibility: the experience of women with acquired brain injury (ABI), who are often undiagnosed and underserved, including those affected by domestic abuse, homelessness and substance use. The project introduces a new screening tool across frontline services, alongside one-to-one support, trauma counselling, peer support groups and brain injury education — giving women a name for what they are experiencing, and the support to move forward.

It is thought that up to 60% of the UK prison population are affected by an acquired brain injury.  Approximately 50% of homeless individuals and sex workers are also living with an ABI – whether diagnosed or not.  Incidents of domestic abuse and violence against women and girls continues to increase – with the number of traumatic brain injuries affecting women though violence steadily increasing. Neuro toxic brain injuries caused by the long-term use of drugs and alcohol is become increasing prevalent and better diagnosed and understood.  However, there is little in the way of structured support for those living complex lives with an acquired brain injury.

This project will allow us to engage new team members to work with alongside new ABI champions within other organisations.  Together we will work to identify and carry out cognitive testing upon women living complex lives.  It will better enable us to understand the breadth of undiagnosed ABI in the area and provide real evidence to prospective funders that there should be early investment in programs to identify and support women living with acquired brain injury.

Thank you so much to @TheLivewellFoundation for believing in what we do. We’re proud to be one of ten organisations receiving funding to do vital work across Plymouth and South West Devon
